Here’s the thing. Antwerp looks a lot different compared to how it looked in the Middle Ages. It used to have a lot of canals, but those canals became the sewer system and were covered up. In The Sewers (De Ruiens), they take you on guided, interactive or a boat tour and tell you all about the history of the city. If you like adventure and don’t mind the stink of history, this needs to be on your list.

• You’ve got a choice of tour options. The guided tour is 120 minutes, interactive tablet tour is 90, and the boat tour is just 15.
• You’ll be going on an urban exploration of the tunnels. You’re gonna see some spiders, you’re gonna smell the remnants of the former sewers, and you’re gonna learn things you won’t anywhere else.
• Along the tour you’ll see street signs of spots in Antwerp like the Grote Markt. The guide will tell you more about the history of that spot or you’ll point your tablet at it and get more info.
• Non Dutch speakers should go for the interactive tour. You can choose commentary in English, German, French
• The boat tour is 15 minutes. It’s basically a teaser of the other tours, but if you don’t have much time then it’s your best pick.
• You get boots and one of those plastic overalls to cover up your clothes so don’t worry about that stink getting all over you!
