Go on a nature packed walk at this little reserve close to Antwerp. You'll see some beautiful bluebells and maybe get a chance to hear the nightingales singing

Oude Landen (Old Lands) is a free to visit nature reserve filled with all kinds of flowers, animals, and plants. This 100 hectare reserve is perfect for a good walk or run. Their 4.5km trail starts at the Veltwijck castle across the street and takes you all around the reserve. Beginners and more experienced walkers will all enjoy this easy going walk.

They’re known for their orchids. There’s tons of wild orchids growing all over the reserve. In the winter you’ll likely spot cattle grazing too. Don’t miss their bluebells and the wilder parts of the reserve that are packed with willow trees.

It’s actually known as Oude Landen (Old Land) since the land here was first mentioned in the 11th century. It’s an oldie but a goodie.

  • Special Events: They do treasure hunts in Dutch that families & kids will love. You search the park for a code to open a treasure chest. You do have to email them to reserve a spot and pay a refundable deposit of 20 euros
  • Oude Landen is right next to the smaller but charming Hof Van Veltwijck where you can see a 16th century castle
  • Dogs are welcome here too! Just keep them on a leash or they may run off and come face to face with some grazing cattle

Tips and Tricks

  • Waterproof shoes are a must if it’s been raining. It can get pretty muddy on some parts of the trail
  • If with the kiddos, e-mail them at [email protected] ahead of time to organise a DIY treasure hunt

  • By Car: free parking available on site
  • By Bus: the nature reserve is close to bus stops Ekeren Districtshuis and Ekeren Markt. Coming from Antwerp? Bus 720 is for you
