What was life like for soldiers in the muddy trenches of WWI? This interactive museum tells you the stories of soldiers in WWI in a way that's suitable for all ages.

What was it like to fight in the trenches, never knowing when you get to go home? In Flanders Fields Museum is the best museum in West Flanders to learn all about the real impact of world war one. History buffs and families will all love this museum, but it’s worth dropping by for everyone to get a full picture of Belgium’s past. Plus, the Cloth Hall is one of the top photo spots in Ypres.

In Flanders Feilds Museum: Bringing History to Life

What happened in WWI? Sadly, 600,000 died in Belgium. In Flanders Fields Museum takes their life stories and puts them on display. See and hear their stories!

When you enter, you’ll get an ID bracelet. Using it, you can trace back the stories of a soldier from WWI. Your bracelet won’t be the same as the next person’s who enters. Or the next. You’re getting a pretty unique experience! History has a lot more impact when you see a face and name, after all.

  • Soldier's Stories: check out all the different uniforms of the soldiers. It’s pretty cool how each Allied country had a different uniform for their army. As you go through the museum you’ll see even more of their personal stories and items. There’s even a Belgian army chaplain who had a dog named Torpille (Torpedo)
  • Temporary Exhibits: In Flanders they do a bunch of temporary exhibits throughout the year. They’re usually all about the WWI period, but from a new angle. Check their website to see what they have on at the moment.
  • Cloth Hall Tower: this is a well-known photo spot and tourist must-see. It was a big deal in the Middle Ages too as it housed a massive cloth market and warehouse. Going up the tower isn’t possible as it’s under reconstruction until 2022, but the Cloth Hall itself is still a great photo spot.
  • What to visit next if you're interested: keep exploring the past at Yorkshire Trench. Less than a 10 min drive away from In Flanders Fields, you’ll get to see a WWI trench in person. This free to visit spot has info boards and original trenches from the war to explore.
