What was the 17th century like for regular people? Here you and the kids get a fun and interactive experience to really get to grips with history.

Every city museum might tell you something about what ordinary people did in the past, but Folk Life Museum takes that idea and turns it up as much as it can. Explore 20 rooms to get a full picture of ordinary working life in the 19th century. The museum takes you through a grocery shop, chemist, and (most importantly) a sweet shop! Also the museum mascot is super cute.

Bring along the kids so they can see how our great-great-grandparents lived. You can only get so much info from history books, after all. Plus, tons of the rooms have old kid’s games and puzzles to try. Why not give them a go? You probably haven’t tried them before.

  • Nostalgia Factor: this little museum will even take you back in time to the childhood of your grandparents. Yup, the ‘Children of the Past, Seniors of Today’ exhibit lets the kids explore and play like they were in the 50s.
  • Sweets Galore: go on the first or third Thursday of the month to see the sweet maker. Watch as they make sweets at the museum and you get to try them too. Check out the traditional lollipops.
  • Don’t miss the cosy pub The Black Cat Bar (Zwart Cat) at the very end of the museum. Named after the mascot of the museum, the black cat Aristide, maybe you’ll happen to see her there.
