Good for easy going walks or as part of a longer hike, Assebroekse Meersen might look like a regular Flemish polder but it’s got its secrets too.

Get your boots on or grab your bike. Ready to get active outdoors? Assebroekse Meersen is just a 15 min drive from Bruges. There’s tons of options for walking and cycling at the nature reserve. The whole walk around the nature reserve is 6.8km, but you can combine it with the next door Ryckevelde forest.

Take a break from the busy city at this nature preserve. Walk along the easy going trail to see orange butterflies, meadows, and even a WWII bunker near the Hoofdsloot bat enclosure. Capture photos of the river Rivers Sint-Trudoledeken en de Hoofdsloot that runs through the nature preserve.

  • Meadow Circles: The archaeological mystery of the odd meadow circles was only solved recently in 2009; turns out there was a castle here in the Middle Ages. There’s no ruins of the castle here, but you can see canals circling a small area where it once was
  • Ice Skating: be the next star on ice! Grab your skates and head over to Assebroekse Meersen. You can skate on the ice here only when the local authority says it’s safe to do so.
